I want to quote commenter Mark W @12:10 because he concisely stated the single best reason to do exit polls, warts 'n' all:
"I'd love it if we'd had some exit polling data on NY-23...since we don't, everyone's going to get to spin that race every which way and no one will be able to prove anything"
