Anyone know why Culver is doing so poorly? Is he really that bad or is it because he is the incumbent? I don't know much about Iowa. Thanks.

JSK - My impression from living in IA for a few years recently, though I'm not a native, is that there is very very little enthusiasm about Culver. He was next in line and ran against a guy with a hugely unpopular R congress around his neck, a Congress of which he was a pretty prominent member.

Iowa has a lot of great progressives who are some of the most dedicated campaigners around the country during presidential elections. You have Harkin whose years of service has paid off, but unfortunately Iowa has too many of the ultra religious types who brainwash a certain type of people with rhetoric and lies like Steve King and Sen Grassley. King a Rep in a conservative district ranted for 40 minutes on CSpan about a openly gay person Obama picked on an education commission. The guy did not have any criminal record and was a good upstanding person. He was open about his life, and was attracted to adult men. King connected him to child predators, child pornography and all sorts of underground perverted groups. It was slander.

Perhaps Obama didn't make a wise choice by appointing the guy, and I think be withdrew the nomination, but Steve King's anger symbolized the very things I disdain about how religion has been misused in politics.

I hope Iowa, being a fairly intelligent state with a high quality of life will look for more Vilsak's and Harkin's rather than creeps like King.
