Do we even know if Matthews is going to run? If he does, I expect it to be a very close race.

Matthews will never recover from the thrill up the leg comment.

As election day drew near, there was a fair bit of chatter about how there could be so many undecided voters in some of the polls. But for an election that's two years away with one candidate who hasn't even announced that he's running, 33% undecided seems kind of low.

Matthews is a Democrat? I thought only Republicans shouted in a monotone on cable TV.

Maybe the dems should try to flip Specter and not run anyone against him in 2010. Anything to get to 60 votes.
I wouldn't want Matthews as the dem nominee--what a tool!

They key # to look at on this poll is that Specter doesn't get a majority. 2 years out, he's pulling a 40. Also - No matter who the Democrat - they are going to pull higher than what the poll shows for AA's.
So, whether or not it's Matthews - the key is - this seat is a possible Dem pick-up.

@Thatcher
I agree. This is a very definite potential Dem pick up. Chris Matthews would win but I think the Dems could do a whole lot better.

Specter will never flip. Pennsylvanians love him because of his moderate status. He is closer to a maverick than what's his name. Chris Matthews will lose in the primary to Chuck Todd.

This assumes that Specter will win the Republican primary in 2010. That assumption is questionable.
The PA Republican party has moved significantly to the right (primarily due to the loss of moderate Republicans changing their registrations to independent or Democratic). As a result, Specter may be vulnerable in a primary fight, since he stands far to the left of most of the remaining members of his party.
Specter may decide to announce retirement in 2010 for health reasons, to avoid the significant likelihood of losing in the Republican primary.

Specter will be a great loss....he is what the Republican party SHOULD be. I am not sure I want anyone who is a talking head in elective office. Their knowledge is way too thin and opinions way too sure....like having 100 Palins but a lot smarter. (just not smart enough)
