POLL: EPIC/MRA MI Primary

A new EPIC/MRA statewide survey of likely primary voters in Michigan (conducted 8/8 through 8/13 for The Detroit News and WXYZ-TV) finds:
- Among 400 Republicans, former Sen. Fred Thompson edges out former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (22% to 19%) in a statewide primary; Sen. John McCain trails at 16%, former Speaker Newt Gingrich at 15%, former Gov. Mitt Romney at 12%. Without Thompson or Gingrich, Giuliani leads both McCain and Romney (30% to 21%).
- Among 400 Democrats, former V.P. Al Gore edges out Sen. Hillary Clinton (36% to 32%) in a statewide primary; Sen. Barack Obama trails at 16%, former Sen. John Edwards at 8%. Without Gore, Clinton leads Obama 45% to 26%.

Why is Gore even being polled? Gore is not running! They could be polling for Wesley Clark, Ted Kennedy, Joe Lieberman or any other democrat they could think of for that matter. It would still be pointless. Gore is not running.
This is a weird poll with Gore's numbers. BTW, the last line is incorrect Edwards gets 14% without Gore, which is, in fact, more than five percent.
Strange results indeed, not just with Gore at 36% but also Gingrich at 15%.
Could these high numbers for two non-runners be a manifestation of MI voters not being tuned in as much yet as voters in the earliest primary states are?
Or could it be the result of an unusual (unusually broad?) selection/filtering of respondents?
These results are pretty weird, when compared against other MI polls, and other state polls around the country. Why would Gore be *leading* in MI? He consistently polls pretty well, despite the fact that he's not running, but I don't recall any other state polls that showed him in first place, ahead of both Clinton and Obama (except maybe in his home state of TN).
And why would Thompson be leading in MI? The only other states he's in 1st place in are in the South. Btw, Giuliani, McCain, Romney, and Thompson have now *all* been in first place in at least one poll of Michigan this year.
