POLL: Field CA Primary


A new Field Poll statewide survey (Dem results, GOP results) of 802 likely voters in California (conducted 3/20 through 3/21) finds:

  • Among 417 likely Democratic primary voters, Sen. Hillary Clinton (at 41%) leads Sen. Barack Obama (28%) and former Sen. John Edwards (13%) in a California primary. With former V.P. Al Gore on the ballot, Clinton runs at 31%, Gore at 25%, Obama at 21%, and Edwards at 8%.
  • Among 315 likely Republican primary voters, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (At 36%) leads Sen. John McCain (24%) and former Gov. Mitt Romney (7%). With former Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Sen. Fred Thompson on the ballot, Giuliani runs at 29%, McCain at 21%, Gingrich at 9%, and Thompson and Romney both at 7%.
  • In general election match-ups, Giuliani trails Clinton, Edwards, and Obama each by 10 or more points. McCain trails Obama and Edwards, but runs within the margin of sampling error Clinton (43% to 48% respectively).
