this is good news and represents a 16 point surge in gay marriage "approval" (as if we cared whether people "approve") from 2006.

I am certainly proud of my state today :)

It's interesting to compare these results with the LA Times results posted on the 23rd, which showed a considerable margin among registered voters favoring a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriage (54% for, 35% against). The Field Poll explicitly asks about such an amendment (with two different question wordings) and finds a slight majority opposed. The Field Poll also shows more support for same-sex marriage in a trichotomous question versus civil unions or no recognition.

There are various salient differences, including the universe (a registered voter list for the Field Poll; random-digit dialing for the Times) and the exact questions asked.

One of these two pollsters is either lying, or using very flawed methodology.
