POLL: MSNBC/McClatchy SC Primary

A new MSNBC-McClatchy/Mason-Dixon survey (Rep, Dem) of South Carolina (conducted 1/14 through 1/16) finds:
- 400 Likely Democratic Primary Voters (± 5%)
40 Obama
31 Clinton
13 Edwards
1 Kucinich
15 Undecided
Among African Americans, Obama leads Clinton 56% to 25%.
- 400 Likely Republican Primary Voters (± 5%)
27 McCain
25 Huckabee
15 Romney
13 Thompson
6 Paul
5 Giuliani
1 Hunter
8 Undecided

Appearantly 60% of the Republican respondents described themselves as born again and Huckabee won big among them. I have a hard time believing, even in Southern Baptist state, that 60% of the Republican voters will be born again. There is a difference between being religious and describing yourself as born again. Thus, the narrow lead for McCain is in actuality likely much larger.

The "born again" description cap apply to a number of different faiths, and has been used by many. So the number doesn't surprise me at all, and the poll could be accurate. On the other hand, Huckabee is somewhat higher in this poll than he's been in many others.

Mike G. What polls are those? All the polls on this website show Huckabee soundly beating McCain! I was shocked to see a poll where McCain was even close. As it is, both are within the margin of error so I think it is difficult to draw any conclusion based upon this poll alone.

Take a look at the last ten polls released in South Carolina. McCain has the advantage.

Change over the last month: Obama +15, Edwards -5; McCain +17, Huckabee +5, Giuliani -12. Conclusion is Obama and McCain moving up nicely. Giuliani appears to have to win Florida.

If Romney wins Nevada, McCain will need to win South Carolina to keep him in the race.
If Romney wins Nevada and Huckabee wins South Carolina, McCain will get a lot of bad press.
He'll be dead, just like he was last summer.

Dec CBS poll: Church-goers and white evangelicals are important voting constituencies in South Carolina; weekly church-goers comprise 43% of Republican primary voters, and white evangelicals are 50%.
