POLL: PPP NC Primary

A new Public Policy Polling automated survey of 735 likely Republican primary voters and 584 likely Democratic primary voters in North Carolina (conducted 2/5 through 2/6) finds:
- Among likely Democratic primary voters, former Sen. John Edwards (at 34%) runs a few statistically insignificant points ahead of Sen. Hillary Clinton (31%). Sen. Barack Obama trails at 18%.
- Among likely Republican primary voters, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (at 31%) runs ahead of former House Speaker Newt* Gingrich (25%) and Sen. John McCain (20%).

Hello,
I'm a french student, so I apologize for my lack of writing-english skills. I would try to ask a simple question. It is written that the first place of Democrat candidate "X" (I'm sorry I forgot the name)is "statistically insignificant", because the second candidate gets 31%. And according to the margin of error, it's not really meaningful. When I look at the results for the Republican candidates, there's a 6-point gap between Giulani and Gingrich. But the size of the sample is only 735. Do you think this gap between the two candidates is really statistically more significant than the gap between the two Democrats candidates? I'm especially concerned with the size of the samples, and the way the interviews were conducted (automatically).
