POLL: Rasmussen Obama, Edwards vs. Giuliani, Thompson

Two new Rasmussen Reports automated surveys find:

  • Among 800 likely voters nationwide (conducted 8/20 through 8/21), Sen. Barack Obama edges out both former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (45% to 43%) and former Sen. Fred Thompson (45% to 41%) in national general election match-ups.
  • Among 800 likely voters nationwide (conducted 8/22 through 8/23), former Sen. John Edwards leads both Giuliani (49% to 41%) and Thompson (49% to 35%) in national general election match-ups.

Phil:

It seems clear that Edwards is the Democratic Candidate the Republicans should fear the most. He would also have long coattails in many states which could put the House and Senate in stronger Democratic control.

Actually, in the majority of polls over the last several months, Obama has done a bit better against Giuliani and Thompson than Edwards has. Overall, Edwards has generally had a bigger edge over Romney than Obama, but the polling over time has shown Obama as a slightly stronger general election candidate than Edwards when it comes to Giuliani, McCain, and Thompson.

However, Obama only beats him out by a hair on that metric, to the point where another couple polls with the results of this Rasmussen one would put them dead even;however, the bottom line is BOTH Obama and Edwards do quite well against all Republicans, and a few points better on average than Clinton does against those Republicans; this will become a bigger and bigger story as the primaries draw closer.
