Nickberry:

The Reichart/Burner Congressional contest is one to watch. Burner lost to Reichert in 2006 by only 2 points, 51% to 49%. Washington State has only 3 GOP in Congress: Reichart who is in a demographically shifting district, Doc Hastings from Tri-cities/Hanford region, and Cathy McMorris in the 5th district (Spokane--the district former Democratic House Speaker Tom Foley represented for 30 years).

Reichert has spent the last two years running as fast as he can away from the Bush administration on visible issues and supporting Bush on less visible votes. His opposition to off-shore drilling is the latest example.

Reichert is clearly vulnerable; it's unclear whether Burner is capable of unseating him, especially given his strength in parts of the district who still give him credit for catching the Green River killer when he was King County Sheriff.

Burner's best chance is to force Reichert into as many head-to-head appearances as possible. Reichert is, to be charitable, weak on his feet. A less successful strategy, I suspect, is to paint him as a Bush administration supporter. His handlers have made sure he has departed from the administration on environmental issues (that matter a lot here) to blunt that criticism.

P.S. It should also be noted that if Burner can ride Obama's coattails, she has a very strong chance of carrying the district. I wouldn't be surprised to see Obama carry the district in the high fifties or more.
