POLL: USA Today/Gallup National (release)

USA Today/Gallup

National
Obama 51, Clinton 39... McCain 61, Huckabee 23, Paul 4

McCain 50, Clinton 46... McCain 48, Obama 47 (LV)
McCain 49, Clinton 47... Obama 49, McCain 45 (RV)

Note: The USA Today/Gallup survey is a different sample than the Gallup Daily Tracking survey, which shows a much closer margin.

Ok, as far as this discrepancy between the gallup polls, isn't the tracking poll based in part on asking people who they have already voted for (if they are in one of the 36 states that have already voted)? So to that extent isn't the tracking poll no longer directly reflecting current opinion, instead to a large extent reflecting past votes? If true, I really don't see the rationale for their tracking poll.

What do the RV and LV things mean? And why do they have different results?

No the gallup poll is adults, the gallup tracking is likely democratic voters. So the Gallup poll is not accurate for the primary at all. Why would you poll all adults when you are talking about a party nomintion. For example if you didn't register as a democrat by Feb 2nd in RI, you can't vote in the primary. All adults is irrelevent.

When talking about the nomination it should absolutely only sample those who have already voted in states that have already been counted, or not sample them at all and just figure in their percentage accordingly. The nomination is the nomination, not a popularity contest, for all adults regardless of citizenship voter registration or the fact that their states have already voted.

This Gallup poll is absolutely meaningless ohter than USA today has asked them to sample all adults, which is telling. They should have refused.
