POLL: Zogby National Primary

A new Zogby telephone survey of likely voters (conducted 7/12 through 7/14) finds:

  • Among 396 Democrats, Sen. Hillary Clinton leads Sen. Barack Obama (37% to 25%) in a national primary; former Sen. John Edwards trails at 11%, former Gov. Bill Richardson at 3%.
  • Among 364 Republicans, former Sen. Fred Thompson edges out former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (22% to 21%) in a national primary; former Gov. Mitt Romney trails at 11%, Sen. John McCain at 9%, former Gov. Mike Huckabee at 5%.

Comments
Thompson takes the lead:

Even though Gallup is the only poll in which Rudy has a comfortable lead. AP has him merely 2 pts. over Thompson. Gallup has come up with come wacky polls as of late. Remember when they said Obama was leading Hil by 1% helped by no apparent event?

Paul:

I think the story here from the July Zogby national poll, compared to Zogby in February 2007, McCain has lost over one-half of his support, and there are other national polls now showing him in the single digits as well. With six months to go before primary season begins, he has to now double his level of support to where it was five months ago, without money and staff. Appears to be a long shot at best.
