Re: Newport, Rove, and historical comparisons.
It's surprising to me that the following facts are not repeated over and over: Reagan and Obama entered December of their first year in office with the highest (seasonally adjusted) unemployment rate of any president (only 1975 comes close).
Clear away the underbrush, and this is why Reagan and Obama take the cake.
