The Drudge-hyped CNN "shock poll"

Topics: 2012 , Barack Obama , CNN

Matt Drudge is currently blaring this headline about a new CNN poll (PDF):

CNN SHOCK POLL: MAJORITY SAY OBAMA DOESN'T DESERVE 2ND TERM

Actually, the poll isn't especially shocking. As The Hill points out, "52 percent of Americans said President Barack Obama doesn't deserve reelection in 2012" -- a number that is almost identical to the proportion who disapprove of the job he's doing (50%).

For context, a Fox News poll in August 2001 asked the following question about George W. Bush:

Considering how President (George W.) Bush has performed so far, do you think he deserves to be reelected or would the country probably be better off with someone else as president?

The results? 36% said Bush deserved to be reelected, 42% said the country would be better off with someone else, and 22% said it depends or weren't sure. These numbers are actually worse than Obama's relative to the 55% approval/32% disapproval numbers the Fox poll showed for Bush.

The hell with Drudge. Obama is doing a very good job considering his circumstances and the adolescent acts of the GOP. No no no no!!!! If Obama's policies were so bad, he wouldn't be at 50 percent approval following a president like Bush who got us into a mess that will take years to get out of. As long as unemployment declines and jobs are created Drudge can mouth off all he wishes.

General sentiment is that the grass is always greener.

I think people are very open to republicans, but a new republican that is not more of the same, since the current republicans are more unpopular than the democrats. The challenge will be if the republicans can find that person.

Drudge is a shock site. What else would you expect? Everyone knows Obama couldn't be reelected if the election were held right now. Not very shocking.

It is very entertaining that people feel the need to instantly post something like this and go back go Bush for a comparison. It's like CNN doing a fact check on the Saturday Night Live skit that made fun of Obama. A news organization like CNN feels the need to fact check a comedy routine?

The Obama supporters are getting extremely touchy and defensive. What next? Will every political cartoon in the country be fact checked and comapred to a similar incident with Bush?

Wait a minute, there, Mr. Wagner. This Obama supporter doesn't have cause nor time to be "extremely touchy and defensive". I'm working to support Barack's program, along with lots of others in OFA. We open our new office here in a week, with our Congressman, and are phoning widely in support of HCR. Some workable form of it WILL be made law very soon, with or without GOP assistance. If they don't want to help the American people, we'll do it alone, but it will be done!

Well good for you, MartiM. Kind of touchy and defensive though, aren't you?

You do your work, I'll do mine. What you call HCR will wreak havoc in this country, will start the downfall of our healthcare system, will put people out of business, will cost jobs, and will raise all of our taxes. That's why I want the GOP to fight it with every muscle in their body.

You think the HCR will help people. I think it will hurt people. I can't comprehend why the left is trying to hurt people.

"will start the downfall of our healthcare system"

Don't know where you've been, but the downfall of our healthcare system started some time ago.

You accuse people of being touchy and defensive, yet here you are being paranoid and hysterical, as if that's any better.
