Basil:

I think people mostly disapprove of the fact that congress isn't doing anything, and the puzzling economic bailout program isn't helping, of late.
R's were trying to say that low approval ratings were an argument for getting rid of lots of congressional D's, but the public wasn't buying it. Part of the disingenuousness and hypocrisy of that argument is that R's have been adamant obstructionists in the senate--as befits the party that wants to cripple gov't altogether by actively promoting incompetent regulation, for instance.

I agree Basil. Congressional approval ratings are meaningless. They should also ask if you think your congressman / congresswoman is doing a good job. You would find a much higher approval rating.

Hm... The election is over? FiveThirtyEight, election forums, pollster... the traffic and number of comments at all those sites decreased a lot.

Yes, I wish they would ask if "your" congressperson is going a good job. The "out" party will always say congress isn't doing a good job (or mostly), then about 1/2 of the in party will think the congress isn't liberal (or conservative enough) so you always get these skewed results.
