Field Marshal:

This is such a non-issue and only was thrown out by Obama during the SOTU to distract his easily distracted supporters.

Does this mean that a significant percent of the population does not know the definition of homosexual?

No it means a significant part of the population are secret bigots, the others are openly bigoted. That and they are ignorant

@bigfoot9p6: No, it highlights the importance of careful use of language. As Nate Silver commented on FiveThirtyEight.com, the use of the phrase "gay men and lesbians" is more humanising than the rather more abrupt "homosexuals". It suggests one or both of (1) ambivalence and (2) indifference among respondents.

"This is such a non-issue"

I imagine it's an issue of some importance to gay people; a significant step forward in their civil rights.
