Would you support or oppose a program giving ILLEGAL immigrants now living in the United States the right to live here LEGALLY if they pay a fine and meet other requirements?

A new law in Arizona would give police the power to ask people they've stopped to verify their residency status. Supporters say this will help crack down on illegal immigration. Opponents say it could violate civil rights and lead to racial profiling. On balance, do you support or oppose this law?

Aha! Millions of Mexicans paying the US government. So that's how the deficit gets paid down. :-)

Honest question: how big of a fine do you think is reasonable?

Too small, and it's not enough punishment for coming here illegally. Too big, and they may not be able to afford it/will do whatever they can to get out of paying it. It's a tough call to make.

Poor Obama. This has been a disastrous week for him in the polls. 39% approval on immigration.

This is a poll of all adults. How many of them are too lazy to register to vote? How many of them are not even citizens? How many of them are illegal residents?

5% or more of the people in this country are illegal residents. How do you think they might have responded to this poll?

I believe you mean millions of Latinos, as they aren't all Mexican.

"Too small, and it's not enough punishment for coming here illegally. Too big, and they may not be able to afford it/will do whatever they can to get out of paying it. It's a tough call to make."

Oddly enough, this is similar to the traditional argument made by conservatives against regulation in reverse. Make the legal means more expensive than the fine, and the corp just breaks the law because the fine's cheaper. So do conservatives support a small fine to ensure conformance to the law, or a large fine to ensure non-conformance deportation?

Seems like an easy way to get an immigration bill passed would be to include 1) more border enforcement, and 2) a path to citizenship + a fine. That would theoretically please both parties. There's no need for AZ style laws at the federal level. The states could follow AZ if they wanted.

Somehow I bet it won't happen. We'll get more AZ laws and the republicans and democrats will b***h at each other.

There's some interesting historical data in the WaPo link. There doesn't seeem to be a time since the 80s when both parties were so low at the same time. Usually, one was always doing better relative to the other.

"7. Overall, which party, the (Democrats) or the (Republicans), do you trust to do a better job in coping with the main problems the nation faces over the next few years?"

Democrats Republicans neither
44 32 18

44 is the historical average of what democrats have gotten on that question. Republicans average 39; 32 is near their historical low. "Neither" has never been so high as it has the past year.

The tea party unfavorables went way up from the last poll, confirming the other poll that showed them with about 39/50 favorability, so people are not seeing them as the answer.

Well Aaron, you basically described the Federal government: GOP and Dems b***hing at each other.

And I guess it's only been recent (past couple decades) since that kind of attitude has trickled down into the citizenry. For instance, I bet a huge chunk of people that view Obama's BP response unfavorably are simply Republicans that won't give him high marks on anything - even when it paradoxically (to their philosophy) infers that the Feds aren't doing enough. Polls should ask "unfavorables" if the Fed should be doing more or less or nothing to get an accurate read.

The question about which party is more trusted is weird. Democrats have more trust, about the same percent they get on the generic ballot too. GOP have less trust than the percent on the generic ballot. Could it mean that more GOP are dissatisfied with their own party than Democrats are of theirs?

The federal law has a much stricter statute than AZ. The AZ law to most people who've actually read it is fairly mild. The Federal law allows ICE agents as well as any state and local law enforcement official to inquire as to citizenship for no reason whatsoever.

Is this some sort of joke or something?

Do you want to kick Marco Rubio out of the country too? What about the rich right wing Cubans who contribute to Republican candidates and helped George W. get elected?

Redneck - What does that mean take back our country? Who falls into the "our" catagory?

the country belongs to everyone of every background who is here legally. That includes latino's. Ther eare legal latino's who are just as upset with illegal immigration as you, but phrases like kicking every latino out are lame.

I have no sympathy for illegal immigrants and owuld not oppose depoartation as part of the penalty for their crimes. But latino's here legally have just as much right to call this nation home as anyone else does.

Far Left,

Rich Cubans? Like who, Tony Montoya? I don't think most right wing Florida Cubans are rich. They simply had the chance to compare both sides of the coin, first or second hand. Unlike almost every leftist in US, who don't have much of a clue of what they're talking about.

I have still not heard others comment on the part of the Arizona law that makes it a first class misdemeanor (punishable by up to 6 months in jail and $2500 fine) for temporarily blocking traffic when you pick up someone to work at another location. That part of the law applies even to citizens picking up a citizen to work for them. Do supporters of the law like that provision?

Amazing. I'll bet you make big bucks with your job at the Psychic Hotline.

Someone who "adores" a president doesn't have a clue what someone else is thinking. Your adoration gets in the way.

Polls about illegal immigration that include illegal immigrants are pretty much useless. And this is ABC/WaPo.

ABC/WaPo is a top 3 pollster according to Nate.

Hoosier: What percentage of undocumented people do you think actually utilize landlines versus cell phones? And of that tiny percent, what are the odds that you'll hit 1 out of the 1000 people they polled. That's gotta be one of the oddest reasons to dismiss a poll, makes the criticism of Raz look pretty reasonable.

Aaron_in_TX:

"What percentage of undocumented people do you think actually utilize landlines versus cell phones? "

Yes, that's ridiculous. It's very likely illegal immigrants are living in the home of someone legal. So if the landline is called, there is a good chance the legal person will answer. If illegals use phones it's probably cel-phones, I bet the pre-paid kind. The likelihood of polling an illegal person is very low.

____________________

dpearl:

"The likelihood of polling an illegal person is very low."

Certainly in a poll of registered/likely voters the chances would be very small but in a poll of a thousand adults I would expect you would have some. Pew estimates the number of illegal immigrants at around 12 million or about 4% of the population (I doubt they have a lower percentage of adults). Thus, even if they respond to surveys at one-fourth the rate of others, that would be 1% of participants.
