I am moderately surprises Obama's approval numbers are still up in the mid to upper 50's. Approval on many of his policies are well below 50. That will catch up to him. And all this spending has just got to stop, I am scared for my kids...this country is on the verge of economic collapse. China is out on a dialy basis now talking about dumping there dollar reserves and may stop financing our debt. America is about to lose its AAA credit rating....this is getting bad and Obama just keeps spending money....the paralell with Jimmy Carter is just astonishing to me. Obama is weak on foreign policy out apologizing for America....just like Carter....at home all he can do is spend money, I am not even sure he knows what he is spending it on at this point, he is just spending for the sake of spending...he is socializing everything and putting it in the control of the executive branch, that is how dictatorshisp are formed.

Look you Dems, the office of president is bigger than any one man or party, Bush was a fiscal disaster and obama is the same. The g'ment is spending way to much...and somehting has to be done about entitlements, we cannot continue this path. We are bankrupt and if China halts if financing, this system will collapse. We are trying to build a house of cards in the middle of a blizzard. The spending has to stop...obama is doing everything wrong, everything. If they pass socialized health care, that is the end, that will bust our economy....spending is just to far out of control at this point...you cannot push this liberal big g'ment tax and spend stuff in this type of economy.

This is sad and I just don't think obama knows what he is doing, ...blaming Bush is not a solution. This has gone way beyond who's an R and who's a D...our entire system is on the line here people, you cannot spend this type of money this long without severe consequences...We have nearly a 2 trillion dollar deficit this year alone....this is unbeleivable...its totally insane.

God helps us..................I realize we survived Carter, but this time around I just don't see another Reagan out there to turn things around.

Why are you moderately surprised that people disagree wtih you? That's been the state of things for about 3 years now.

Obama is at 58 in Rasmussen (+7 since Cairo), and has stayed steady in nearly every other poll from the mid 50's to low 60's. The average person is not ready to declare Obama a failure like Newt Gingrich does, it's only been 5 months.

You're letting your political philosophy overwhelm your perceptions, your analysis is all about why you don't like the job Obama is doing, and very little about why people apparently feel differently.

It's a valid point that Obama's policies aren't as popular as he is, but what you seem to be missing is that people are taking a wait-and-see attitude, and are willing to give Obama a reasonable amount of time before they pass judgement. 5 months is not a reasonable amount of time.

@cjk002

I am not letting philospahy cloud my judgement. I left the rpublican party in 2004 because they were spending way to much money and I did not vote for W in 2004. I left the party thatused to stand for smaller g'ment and responsible spending. Both parties are now spending trillion and trillions of dollars. This has to stop. We cannot afford a waite and see apporach because obama, like buh is bankrupting us, obama is just doing it faster. What do you think is going to happen when china says no more, we are not buying your debt any longer because yo have to much and you cannot control your spending?

His approval is still a lot of honeymoon, I will grant you that.....this is just simple math, we can't spend this type of money without severe consequences....now there is early talk about a national sales tax, well if you libs oopose a flat tax you should oppose that because it punishes people hwo don't have a lot of money.................

Look I am just saying, things are worse than the media is reporting, instead of reporting wha is really going on, ya got the guy from newsweek comparing obama to God.....this stuff is ttoally messed up. Like I said, at this point its not about R and D....I don't care what party your in, we cannot afford this level of spending. Look what to much entitlement and beneifts did to GM...forced them into bankrupcy....they could not compete when there cost for making cars is so much higher than there compeitition like Toyota....the g'ment is giving away to many entitlements....an democracy cannot survive when a majority realize they can vote themselves whatever they want...and these days everyone wants the free ride....the majoirty out there is apathetic and uninformed....

He is doing it all wrong....and blaming Bush is getting old, this guy i our president, he does not have the luxury of just blaming the other guy, we elected him to solve problems not run to broadway shows while pointing the finger at others....

Once again, you're projecting your own political convictions into your analysis of the poll numbers. I get it, you disagree with Obama's way of doing things. But this is about why people think he's doing a good job.

You seem to be unwilling to accept the fact that right now, most people don't agree with your take on things, or the right-wing talking points about Obama taking one night off to see a show and blaming Bush. People don't care that Obama went to New York, especially since Bush spent 1/3rd of his time in office on vacation. It's what presidents do, and it has no effect on whether or not they can do their job.

The polling shows that the American people do blame Bush, they know that this recession started almost 2 years ago and they believe that the policies of Bush are responsible. They also understand that there will be more government spending. They are uncomfortable with the amount, but they feel that at least some of it is needed, especially when it comes to things like healthcare.

It's fine to disagree with that, but it's where we are right now. My problem is with people who are trying their damndest to declare Obama a failure before we get to see whether or not his plans work. The American people want to give him that chance, but the right-wing does not.

I do get it. I know the people blame Bush...and are not blaming obama yet...I remember back in 2001 people weren't blaming bush for that recession either...I realize that...that is all fine with me. My beef is what obama is doing is totally wrong. I won't beat the dead horse, some of this is jus tme venting today because I am watching china out there getting closer and closer to halting its financing of all this debt we have. that will be a wake up call to people when they do that...and they will.

we saw what overspending by bush did, so why do people think overpsneidng by obama will be better?

we're going to pay for this spending..and its gonna hurt.Even though people were not blaming bush in 2001 for that recession, i just do not remember bush blaming clinton all the time, maybe i missed it or am blocking it out but i just don't recall him blaming the other guy. in fact i dont really rrecall clinton blaming bush sr. for that recession either.

...oh and i dont mind presidents tkaing vacations, but running off to new york in a week where over 100,000 peope lost there jobs and using htat kind of tax payer money is irresponsible. he is supposed to be change remember? not politics as usual?

I understand your point of view on spending, you don't have to keep repeating that you think it's disastrous. This is about what the public believes. You have to admit that you proved my point here with your last comment: "My beef is what obama is doing is totally wrong."

The Bush administration and Republicans have been blaming Clinton for everything from 9/11 to the housing crisis, and you can probably turn on Fox right now and you'll see Karl Rove blaming Clinton for something else. Just because you don't remember seeing something doesn't mean it didn't happen.

The idea that Clinton didn't blame Bush for the economy is ridiculous, that's how he got elected. It was James Carville who came up with the phrase "It's the economy stupid" during that campaign. Clinton had to fight the same battles that Obama is facing over spending, taxes, health care, and trivial things like White House travel.

Obama's trip to New York has nothing to do with politics, except to those who oppose him and are looking for anything the throw in his face. The people of New York were ecstatic to see him enjoying a night on the town, the same people that voted for him by a 2 to 1 margin. Throwing that whole "is this change?" line at something as trivial as a 1 day trip is ridiculous, and the polling shows that the people agree. This is the kind of petty issue that makes the average person tune out the opposition, and then they don't listen when you actually have a valid point.

@cjk002

Your missing my point. I do not recall Bush himself directly blaming clinton....his suppoerters and toehrs do that type of thing, usually the president stays above that himself. just like clinton sent out carville to do the dirty work....in the campaign that is expected to blame the other guy, but once your elected, your the president, pointing fingers is not leadership...i dont beleive bush did that, nor clinton...there staff and party members did........i could be wrong.

i am no fan of W, but can you honestly tell me if that in the middle of this recession right now bush went and spent 245k of tax payer money to take laura to new york for a show the press and media owuld not go hog wild witho how irresponsible he is...how out of touch, etc, etc...its a double standard.

Your right its all about public opinion...but without a media doing its job no one gets the real story anymore. you have major sources of news like nbc, abc and cbs, ny times, et clearly on the left and then you have fox, well basically just fox o nthe right....media is now presented with party and ideaological spin.1.......apathy my freind, its everywhere, these days everyone wants a free lunch and they are more likely to beleive a bumper sticker or a comedian about wha tis real fact than ever before................

cjk002:

Where do you get the $245,000 number? The White House hasn't released any figures on that. Bush took DOZENS of trips to Crawford and Camp David while the economy was tanking.

My point is that the trip has absolutely nothing to do with the job the president is doing, by all accounts the president is spending more time at work than Bush did. This whole issue is just red meat for those who dislike Obama so much that they will criticize anything he does. You don't have to believe me, just look at the polling.

As far as apathy is concerned, were you watching the same election I was? Obama got millions of people involved in the political process who wouldn't have otherwise, and so did Sarah Palin. This last weekend, the remnants of Obama's campaign organized house parties that thousands attended in support of health care. The Tea parties attracted 3 or 400,000 people across the country, and more people voted in the last election than ever before.

I would argue that the American public is more engaged than it has been in years. Just because it's not yielding the results you would prefer doesn't lessen it's impact.

This goes right back to my original point, as you yourself said your beef is with Obama's policies, and you take issue with the fact that more people don't see it your way. I can understand that, because it's exactly how I felt during the Bush presidency.

Oh no my freind, have you seen many of hte voters who voted? Watch media malpractice where he interviewed a dozen or so college students who voted for obama, they knew NOTHING! I mean nothing at all...half hte people who voted in this country don't know any of the issues from who the secratary of state is to what cap and trade is....obama won on image and change....the economy was bad, by default bush take the balme as the party in power always does and the other guy alway wins....but it was not because they are more informed. Its actually scary so many people are voting but having no idea what they are voting for or who they are voting for. Do you know how many idiot college students who know nothing oted for obama? Or how many racist rednecks voted for mccain who know nothing? The number is frighteningly high.....
The average person has no idea what thigns like cap and trade are or the difference between the deficit and the debt. The media is just not doing its job. More people know who won american idol last year than know who the vp is.....................so public opinion is being shaped by popularity...

If you've learned anything about polling from this site, you should have learned that a few interviews do not make an accurate survey.

I would agree however that most voters are uninformed on some issues, but that doesn't make the decisions they make as voters any less relevant. The vote of an Obama supporter who doesn't know who Joe Biden is just as relevant as the vote from a Palin supporter who thinks Obama is a Muslim. I don't like the reasons that either of those voters used to mae their decisions but it's their right to do so.

American politics is largely about image, I would definitely agree. Which is why it's important for a leader to have the qualities that inspire confidence in the electorate. In 2008, Obama had it, and McCain didn't.

The people who decided this election were the same people who always decide our elections, the ever-growing group of moderates who don't belong to either political party. Obama won every demographic group except for white males and those over 65, so it's hard to argue that he won because of a bunch of ignorant voters.

Obama did indeed get a mandate to try it his way. But, as Stillow is pointing out, if those who are buying our debt (ie China) stop doing so, we are going to be in a bad spot. Worse than we are now.

I for one never did buy into the idea that thngs are so desperate that we have to have the govt bail out so many businesses. If Carter had let Chrysler go belly up way back when, Ford and GM would have less competition and would be selling more cars. Whatever happened to the freedom to fail?

So now it is 20,000 GM workers who have to sacrifice by losing their jobs. (That might not be an exact number, but you get the idea).

I have an idea. Lets add 20,000 social workers and govt bureaucrats to the list. Let the govt feel GM's pain. But instead we are going to grow the bureaucracy with car czars and health care potentates.

We conservatives have every right to be up in arms about runaway spending and to scream at the top of our lungs that it is disastrous. You libs got your panties ruffled by the Iraq war and those of us who are fair minded never begrudged you the right to whine. And these massive deficits are a much greater danger to us than the war ever was. I know many will not agree with that, but it's my opinion just the same.

Bigmike:

And whatever happened to the tax cut 95% of us were going to get?

I suppose the GM guys will get a tax cut. The taxes on unemployment will surely be less than what they were on their wages.

Change! You betcha.

Hey Big Mike,

My bi-weekly paycheck is bigger than it was when Bush was still in office. It isn't much, but it's something.

And I also recall having my patriotism questioned when when idiotically invaded Iraq. But feel free to complain about Obama's policies all you want, there are still more of us who support him than people like you.

____________________

Bigmike:

Bob

You certainly did not have your patriotism questioned by me. Although I am aware that there were those who did so. The 1st amendment has to work both ways.

You guys have us outnumbered today. But we are catching up! Slow but sure.

Now if we can just find some candidates who know how to run for office, lol.

The idea that the right didn't give us hell for opposing Iraq is ABSOLUTELY RIDICULOUS. I don't know how you could even bring yourself to type that.

Of course you have every right to complain about Obama just like we did about Bush, I never said you didn't have that right. My point is that a conversation about polling should be about polling, not a 5-paragraph screed about why you think Obama is destroying the country.

Obama's tax cut took effect in March, what do you mean what happened to it?
