The Republicans are biting themselves in the foot by organizing thugs to shut down Town Hall meetings. They know they don't have a winning arguments. Many of these thugs do not even understand the nitty gritties of the debate. Many of these nuts get govt welfare and other entitlement programs in the form of unemployment benefits, medicare, medicaid, child support, etc. These same people are yelling at Town Halls asking the govt not to touch their medicare. Is this knowledge gap due to mere stupidity or paranoia or lack of civic education?

Maybe you should look up the definition of the word thug. Has anyone committed an act of violence? Is anyone standing outside the door trying to intimidate those who want in?

How about we stop the name calling. Everyone knows both sides try to pack these things with their most zealous supporters. It is not anything new.

The first question in this poll, which has nothing to do with thugs, is no surprise and I would expect it is at least close to on the money. Given the generally accepted spread in party ID at something between 5-10 points, I can believe these results.

Come on Bigmike...what says thug more than 70 year old ladies and people in wheelchairs?

What says thug more than WW2 veterans and Vietnam war veterans?

Don't forget they are all racist bigots too....

I don't know about racist bigots or thugs, but what do you call it when citizens come to a townhall to ask their representatives substantive questions and concerns they have about the healthcare package being written in congress, and other citizens come to the same meeting yelling and shouting down any other question from being asked or discussed? Perhaps the word is childish.

Healthcare reform deserves serious debate from both sides, not people yelling and screaming socialism and government euthanasia at the top of their lungs, while other Americans just want an explanation of what congress is actually doing. If it were only 70 y/o ladies in wheelchairs, I'm pretty sure we wouldn't be having this conversation.

As for the poll, I do find it hard to believe. With congressional approval in the dumps (most numbers are around 25-30%), it seems strange that Republicans get 41% approval and Democrats 52%. As for the question of who should control congress, the internals of this poll aren't very promising for Democrats. While the numbers haven't moved much for Republicans, the number of people who want Democrats in charge has dropped 12% from January. I do suspect that if something substantive gets passed and Obama is able to dial down the insane shouting match and explain his efforts to the American people, that Republicans will come out of this in the fall in a weakened state.

Actually BigMike there have been acts of violence, several fist fights (typically started by a protester) have broke out at various town hall meetings, a couple leading to small brawls, so while the word thug may be a bit much it is still applicable. It really was quite a big story, and while yes both sides do exploit their most...radical, of supporters, you never saw this kind of action from democrats or their supporters when they were in the minority. Never in my life have I seen a political party (meaning this is new for the GOP too) so arbitrarily and unambiguously oppose everything a president has to offer solely for the point of opposing him. Take the NoKo rescue for example.
