I had the same thought when I heard it. Why else would such a clear violation of a sovereign country's border happen right now?

I think that the only way it might be a "game saver" would be if the Syrians had responded and successfully taken down one of the strike attack aircraft. That would set up a cycle of attacks and retaliations.

Ironically it would draw us into another war. While that might appear to bolster McCain's "security" credentials...HE'S the one saying that Obama is going to get us into another war.

The truth is McCain-Palin are the ones more likely to get us into a third or fourth conflict...with Syria, Iran, Russia, Pakistan, Venezuela, etc. Not Obama...who would likely work things through negotiations and joint pressures from European and regional allies.

Of course, trtying to figure out the pathological mind-set of the Bushies is like attempting to read the entrails of dead animals for omens.

That was my IMMEDIATE response. And if I'm thinking that, then you can bet anyone else in the world paying the slightest attention is thinking the same thing.

Bush has a reputation of a monster pretty much worldwide (though interestingly, Americans as a people are viewed much more sympathetically). All Syria has to do is sit on its hands and let world opinion further vilify the present administration, and its successor by proxy if elected, McCain, to further isolate the U.S. from her allies and put us in an even more precarious position.

If they DO respond and Obama wins, as is likely, they know they’ll have a much more difficult road ahead dealing with a man who can, and will, reunite our allies into a cohesive, intelligent and frankly formidable force they’d probably rather not confront with violence.

I find it nearly impossible to believe that even that madman Cheney would continue to push for some kind of October surprise in this vein given the obvious damage to the U.S.’s already shredded credibility in world politics.

But then McCain picked Palin, so any kind of desperate insanity from the right no longer surprises me.
