POLL: Newsweek/PSRA National Survey
A new Newsweek/PSRA national survery (story, results) of 1003 adults (conducted 1/24 and 1/25) finds:
- 30% of Americans approve of the way Bush is handling his job as president; 64 % disapprove
- 53% think Bush will be seen as a "below average" president, 14% say "above average" and 30% say "average".
- In national general election match-ups, Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama each run a few points ahead of either Sen. John McCain (both by 6%) or former Mayor Rudy Giuliani (both by 3%).

as a Republican political consultant for
30 years as well as a politcal commentator
based in New York's Westchester County I have
come to the conclusion that the presidential
hopes of John McCain are rapidly fading in light of his support of the surge in Iraq.
In fact, although McCain was skeptical about
the number of troops sent to Iraq in the first
place, and agreed with General Shisecki as to
the fact that the invasion was sorely undermanned, his recent advocacy of more
troops puts him at odds with 80% of the electorate. As for Giuliani, it makes no
political sense for him to back the president's
policy at this juncture because even if he
is pandering to the conservative base he
is giving up too much for general election
purposes. Which brings me to the putative
candidacy of Chuck Hagel..conservative.
heartland,and dead on on the issue of Iraq.
He may be the only viable Republican who can
win by the time we reach the primaries.
