LordMike:

Lots of young and educated people leaving Michigan... i.e. much of Obama's base. As retired union workers pass on to the great factory in the sky, Michigan will become redder unless new industry is brought in soon. Since MI is experiencing the same brain drain as Ohio has had, that seems unlikely (Ohio is an economically dead state and will continue to be until it institutes massive education reforms, even then it will take decades to recover).

I disagree Mike. I do not believe Michigan will become redder. Ohio and Penn have become more blue as people have fled those states. I think Michigan will be the same. You are correct, IMO, about the youth vote leaving but i think a lot of the Reps are also leaving for cheaping states. I think the union workers will be the only one's around in a decade.

In addition, as states like MI continue to worsen, the people staying there become increasingly dependent on g'ment aid...in which case states like MI will become bluer...at least i nthe short term.

I also disagree with Mike. Here in WI, the educated risk-takers and entrepreneurs are fleeing in droves and the state is becoming bluer. People assume that liberals are the smart ones and that, when they leave, the only ones left are the stupid conservatives who never graduated high school. Yet the entrepreneurial free market class is the ideological heart and soul of the GOP and that's who is leaving the Midwest. One day they will leave the country altogether.
