It's like Bill Maher has said for years. Republicans are very good at winning elections. Not so good at actually running government. (And I'm paraphrasing of course.. and I realize Maher was not the first to say this). But at this point, the message has been wild, inconsistent, and reeked of desperation from day 1 of this campaign. You know it's funny, I was reading AMERICA: The Book (Jon Stewart), which is a good 3 years old now, and the presidential campaign section is hilariously and frighteningly accurate.

re-post of my two cents from the DailyKos thread, fwiw:

good morning all,
@johncoz: boom has declared that he no longer cares for McCain several times over the last two weeks, and I've been pretty busy, so I've read maybe half the blogs/polls at best.
boom has a revolving door personality, i dare not call him a flip flopper. but you gotta feel for him: his candidate repeatedly and creatively lets him down in every imaginable way possible. it is as if McCain/Palin were running a shill campaign for Obama for the last two weeks, doing everything they can to dismantle their base and improve Obama's margins.

We talked about a week ago about this McStrategy and the terms "erratic" and "knee-jerk" kept coming up. And since then they only continued to shoot themselves in the foot in new and exciting ways.

Last night the AL legislature commission found Palin abused her powers. And yet, imho, that won't do any real damage because the goods are already so damaged, that no additional harm seems possible.
McCampaign has been crying that Obama lead ought to be in double digits. That was their last weekend morning show battle cry. And it seems, they have done everything in their power to ensure that. "God bless them", as Joe Biden's mom would say, "but they are total idiots". You got to hand to them, though, they've accomplished the double digits in less than a week: Newsweek, Gallup and DailyKos.

Boom is out at the bars, I bet, conducting his own poll, one respondent at a time.

The Ayers stuff is really doing the job.. the job of burying the McCain campaign once and for all that is. At some point McCain has to a) start thinking about his legacy. Does he really want to go into the sunset of his political life, and life in general, as the guy who incited hate, fear, violence, and horrific divisiveness in a vain attempt to win the presidency. And b) If he still think he can win, realize this sh*t just ain't working, and in fact making it slip further and further away as the clock winds down..

THE REZKO RUMOR MILL IS CHURNING HARD:

The latest rumor is that Special Prosecutor Extraordinaire Patrick Fitzgerald may be heavily involved with the Tony Rezko deal and the fact he is singing like a bird to the Feds.

There are whispers of some quid pro quo illegal actions taken by Obama with reference to a sweetheart loan and his endorsement of a State Treasurer.

Lots of rumors so far, but the thing is gaining some steam. We'll see. Obama has been teflon so far as the MSM refuses to look into any of these matters ad instead provides Obama cover.

Here is an article about it. The source is obviously anti-Obama, so keep that in mind as your read. Even if you don't believe it, it's good to know what is being talked about behind the scenes:

North Carolina polls are only as good as their geographic breakdowns. If this poll was localized in Charlotte (i.e., if the "research in the field" = face-to-face interviewing in the Charlotte market), then it is not going to be an accurate reflection of "North Carolina" voters as a whole. On the other hand, if this poll does represent a snap-shot of the Charlotte market, it is incredibly good news for Obama, as Charlotte is the most Republican region of the state. (The city itself is Dem, but the burbs are extremely Pub)

At any rate, the most accurate NC polling has tended to offer quite specific internals for geographic sampling. cf. PPP, Civitas (both NC based) for the kind of specificity required to produce an accurate sample in this highly heterogeneous state.

McCain is in serious trouble. He has painted himself into a corner. Every republican strategist is trying to come up with a plan to move McCain forward. It is not working.

From Bloomberg.com

"Republican campaign strategists say there is no electoral map to victory for McCain that doesn't include Florida, Missouri, Ohio, Virginia and North Carolina.

``Without those five locked in, all it is rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic,'' Republican consultant and pollster Tony Fabrizio said.

Ed Rollins, political director in Ronald Reagan's White House, said that if McCain, 72, doesn't engage more on the economy, ``he's going to have three weeks of nobody paying any attention to him.''

Rollins said the Arizona senator needs to do ``something really drastic,'' such as making a pledge to serve only one term so that he can deal with the economic crisis without regard to political consequences.

John Feehery, a Republican strategist formerly with House Speaker Dennis Hastert, said such a move would backfire.

``That would put all the focus on Palin,'' Feehery said, referring to McCain's running mate, the governor of Alaska. ``He needs the focus to be on Barack Obama, not Sarah Palin.'' "

Here is the Sun-Times story "Prosecutors talking to Rezko, seek to delay sentencing"--

Federal prosecutors asked a judge Monday to indefinitely postpone Tony Rezko's scheduled Oct. 28 sentencing on corruption charges, acknowledging they are engaged in talks with the former top political fund-raiser for Sen. Barack Obama, Gov. Blagojevich and others "that could affect . . . sentencing."

Several criminal-defense lawyers, who spoke to the Sun-Times only on the condition they not be named, said prosecutors have asked to interview or reinterview their clients about allegations that Blagojevich's campaign took contributions in exchange for state contracts or appointments...

If a judge agrees to delay Rezko's sentencing, it could be good news for Democratic presidential nominee Obama because the former Obama friend and fund-raiser was set to be sentenced just days before the Nov. 4 election.

But I am, glad to hear that Fitzgerald is a standup guy again. I remember when Republicans tried to ruin his reputation after he nailed Libby.

Of course, if Obama were a Republican he'd pardon Rezko and Gov. Blagojevich like Bush pardoned Libby. He'd also have his AG fire Fitzgerald... and then lie about it.

Well, maddiecat... Rezko for a couple of decades was Obama's friend, mentor, and fund raiser. That fact will not go away no matter how much Obamanation would like it to happen.

Regarding Keating... ALL was revealed. Nothing is hidden. The FACTS have been out since early 1990's.

Whereas, Rezko facts are still to be revealed and thus is current issue. Again, I never said Obama was directly part of the corruption, but his longtime close association with Rezko will likely have a negative impact .. to what degree no one knows. And it looks like that will be deferred until after election.

In the words of a great American from Delaware, "Ladies and Gentlemen!" Negative stories that aren't confirmed in a hard way do not affect anything at this point in a campaign. Voters expect slime to be heaved, and so dark imprecations about one or another person tend to be dismissed. So, the key thing is there anything between now and November 4 that changes the fundamentals in any way? No. Perhaps the debate next week might produce something that shifts things more in one or the other direction. Aside from that, what we see now is what we get on election day. Of course, if McCain persists in letting the dung fleas of his base take over the front pages and the news, then the rot of his campaign will continue too.

____________________

TJIRISH34:

KipTin do you know Harry Truman's history? How he got started in politics and who helped him win the Kansas Senate seat? I am not going into details here. I saw 2 parter on American Experience about Truman. Truman was an honorable man but he got to senate because of one of the most corrupt political machines ever! Truman rationalized it by not being corruptible himself. Now you are Obama you don't have a silver spoon like Bush. You want to get into politics. Rezko befriends you and offers to help. Do you say no? Point being just because Rezko helped him doesn't mean Obama is a dirty politician. You want to bring up the house? Fine but Obama admits it was dumb. But we are talking about his house. He doesn't own 7 houses and anyone out there owning a house knows if someone offers to help you improve it. You ae tempted. Ubtil anyone can prove this "help" directly affected political influence from Obama to Rezko it is noise. Once again we go back to the primary. If Hillary couldn't prove it. McCain isn't either. Increasingly what you are seeing is John McCain's campaign is the 3rd best campaign in this race. Obama #1, Hillary 2nd, McCain 3rd. Hillary should have ran as a Republican and picked Huckabee as her VP.Rezko case is being delayed because he is singing. but not about Obama.

This NC poll has a sample of only 500, so its reliability is questionable. It finds McCain ahead in NC (by just 1.8%), unlike 2 more recent polls and 5 of the last 8 polls. However, this poll, like others, does show the contest in NC to be within the margin of error.

This poll was in the field entirely before Obama's recent winning debate performance; it's quite possible that it too would have found Obama ahead in NC had it been conducted after the debate.

NC is a true swing state. McCain's schedule through next Wednesday does not have him visiting this state. Instead, he and Palin are curiously campaigning in lean-Obama states like IA and PA. McCain will not visit NC until next Thursday, at the earliest--when there will be just 18 days left until election day.

McCain's best strategy at this point would be to concede the Kerry states plus IA, stop doing joint events with Palin (they can cover twice as much ground apart), and focus on FL, NC, VA, OH, IN, MO, CO, NM, and NV. If both he and Palin committed 2 days of their time to each of these states over the final 18 days of the season, they could be on the ground in each state for a total of 4 days before election day.

____________________

Myles Mann:

I think this poll is a little more accurate. North Carolina has been pretty loyal to the Republicans. Obama is definitely within striking distance in that state and is a true battleground.

____________________

cinnamonape:

"The latest rumor is that Special Prosecutor Extraordinaire Patrick Fitzgerald may be heavily involved with the Tony Rezko deal and the fact he is singing like a bird to the Feds."

First off, these have been rumors for almost a half year...and every time that the big "expose" of Obama is supposed to emerge it turns out that it's actually just the opposite. He's further exonerated of any involvement.

And none of the witnesses before the grand jury said that any of the questions referred to Obama. Fitzgerald specifically stated that the reference in his indictment to a "politician" did not refer to Obama. And Rezko stated directly to the judge, under oath, that although the prosecutors tried to get him to reveal acts that might involve Obama, that he refused to implicate the Senator in activities that were untrue. He said Obama was uninvolved with any criminal activities as far as he was aware.

Thus if Rezko "sings" about Obama it makes him subject to perjury charges, and, given that he has already asserted prosecutorial pressure directed at Obama, the claims might not be considered plausible in any court.
