Stillow, it's not as expected as you might think. Oregon gets a rep for being pretty progressive, and the willamette valley certainly is. But Eastern Orgeon is Deep dark red. My wife grew up in Lake View, and she got a lot of hassles for being half native american. There were stores when she was growing up that refused to serve "colored" folk. Lest you think this was a long time ago she's in her early 30s.

Eastern Oregon is easily as bad as Applachia or the Ozarks when talking about inbred ignorant racists.

The thing is Oregon is highly polarized. The blue areas are very blue and the red areas are very red. Whats more they've been pretty evenly matched in terms of population. In 2000 Gore won Oregon by less than half a percent. Kerry won in 2004 by 4.2% but the left in Oregon is very anti-war and the right here (as with many western states) is somewhat more libertarian than straight GOP. Obama won by a huge margin but, you know, "duh."

It took the Obama/anti-bush wave to oust Gordon Smith from one of our senate seats.

Lastly Kulongoski, our current governor and a dem, has been pretty ineffective and not all that popular.

All of which means that republicans don't have to be doing badly in this matter. Not that I'm complaining, I'd be thrilled to see Kitzhaber re-elected to governor. He's one of the few politicians I actually respect.
