POLL: FOX South Carolina Republican Primary

A new FOX News/Opinion Dynamics statewide survey (story, results) of 500 likely Republican primary voters in South Carolina (conducted 1/9) finds:

  • Sen. John McCain runs at 25%, former Gov. Mike Huckabee at 18%, former Gov. Mitt Romney at 17% in a statewide primary; former Sen. Fred Thompson trails at 9%, former Mayor Rudy Giuliani and Rep. Ron Paul both at 5%.
  • All other candidates receive less than five percent each. The margin of sampling error is 4%.
  • "Respondents were randomly selected from two source: 250 were randomly selected from a list of voters who had previously voted in a South Carolina Republican primary, and 250 were drawn from a random digit dial sample which gives every household in the state an equal chance of being called."

One of the big factors in the NH debacle was the volatility of the contest... I'd like to suggest that when reporting on polls from now on, that the information from this kind of question be included...and not just the "raw" totals...

2. Are you certain to support that person or do you think you may change your mind and support someone else in the 2008 South Carolina presidential primary?

......................Certain Change? (Dont know)
9 Jan 08 ..............58%......40......1
McCain supporters......58%......41......2
Romney supporters......57%......42......1
Huckabee supporters....60%......38......2

I mean, with only 58% of voters sure of who they will vote for, I think people need to be warned not to draw conclusions from this poll...

It should be a given that caution needs to be taken with a volatile electorate. However, the trend for McCain in SC is impressive. In December 2007 McCain polled 4th (Pew), 3rd (SUSA), 5th (Ras), 4th (CBS), 5th (IA), 5th (CNN), and 5th (MSNBC). In January 2008, McCain has polled 3rd (SUSA), 2nd (RAS), and 1st in this Fox poll.

How on earth can we give an opinion for your poll on the GOP primary in SC?

Romney, with two wins and two second places, is the most presidential and most electable. Romney will bring new vision and new voices and proven problem solving skills to Washington. As an outsider he has the best chance to create genuine change. Romney is a master negotiator. He Listens,Learns, Evaluates, and Leads with integrity. More than any other, Romney can pull this nation back together. A vote for Romney is a vote for a better future for all.

An Arizona Senator Gone Bad.

Beware, McCain is not to be trusted!

He is our Senator and has sold us down the river many times by not supporting what his constituents want, but instead what he , or his financial supporters want. A prime example of this is his Immigration Bill. The voters in the State of Arizona overwhelmingly approved propositions that take action against illegal aliens in our State receiving benefits that us taxpayers receive, and empowering the police to turn over lawbreakers to ICE for deportation, and took a stance in direct opposition to his Bill. The Head of the Republican Party here does not support him, Maricopa county has 75% of AZ population & it's Infamous toughest Republican Sheriff in the Nation does not support him, the Republican County Attorney does not support him, the Republican leaders in our legislature do not support him , and of course, No Democrat or Libertarian supports him. We know him well. He was a Carpetbagger who married into the Hensley Liquor Distribution family and that's how he got the $ to run & help keep his seat this long. He is a RINO that is supported by the Growers that underpay the illegal workers and the Tourist Industry who also uses their status to underpay them, and the Jewish lobby, , who see him as one of their only sources of billions to Israel, and the current war to protect it. Notice -Lieberman, an Independent Democrat endorsed him. Don't be fooled, they are the ones he will represent , not the people who elect him, we know!

An Arizona resident for over 33 years.

I second comments of the above person.
McCain is for amnesty & thsnks to people
like him - one beautiful Southern
California
is suffering . We have gangs, drug
smuggling, welfare fraud, prostitution
rings, phony credit card schemes ,
and
millions of illegals, who do not pay
in enough to cover their services .
Many of them are not assimilating -
They want the benefits, not the
citizenship. The State of California
pays out over 2 BILLION dollars per year
for services to illegal aliens . That's
over & above what they bring in in taxes.
McCain has done nothing to stop this
horrible situation. South Carolinans
wake up if you don't want the same thing
to happen to your beautiful State.
