POLL: Rasmussen Meetings w/ Leaders, National Security

Via TPM-Election Central, a new Rasmussen Reports automated survey of 1,000 adults nationwide (conducted 7/25 through 7/26) finds:

  • 42% of Americans think "the next President should meet with the heads of nations such as Iran, Syria, and North Korea without setting any preconditions;" 34% think the next President should not.
  • Among Democrats 55% think the next President should, while 22% the next President should not.
  • 28% say they trust Sen. Hillary Clinton "the most to handle national security issues;" 20% say former Mayor Rudy Giuliani, 15% say Barack Obama, 11% say former Sen. Fred Thompson.

Andrew:

I can't understand why Rasmussen shows Clinton with an increased advantage over Obama in their latest tracking poll. The diplomacy issue has dominated media coverage. Could it be that Clinton outperformed Obama in other debate issues? The post-debate Survey USA poll found that Clinton did much better than Obama in that debate, regardless of the diplomacy differences. That may explain this contradiction. Some of us who frequent the blogosphere are inundated with Obama vs. Clinton threads, and this may lead us to think that diplomacy is what the debate was all about. It's an oversimplification.

Alex:

Rasmussen has been shockingly volatile recently, and in the opposite direction of the "wider-scope" surveys (Gallup, Diageo, ABC-WP).
