Aside from the 12 pt swing in approval on healthcare in a week, I think the best numbers for Obama are the fact that 64% of respondents either think their coverage will not change, or would be better for them, "22% Help, 27% Hurt, 42% No effect", exactly the kind of reaction Obama was hoping for. The devil's in the details, but for the moment it seems his speech Wed. was a game changer.

Republicans are all over the place. So did CBS's poll belong in the trash last week or this week? What about Rasmussen (R) having similar results?

Still a divided public. The political danger of doing nothing for moderate and conservative Dems is beginning to outweigh the risk of voting for health care reform. The "triggered" public option is the face saving compromise that will allow a majority of the blue dogs and the progressives to see this through. My guess is that Snowe and Collins, the last two GOP senators in New England, will sign on to avoid reconciliation and all the Dem Senators will fall in line.

A bill by Thanksgiving.

I swear, the republican party has been taken over by John Birch Society sillyness and paranoia. They simply switched "communist conspiracy" with "liberal establishment." It's a brilliant tactic, because they can simply dismiss anything that comes out of the "liberal establishment" because it's worthless in their eyes, and only listen to those outlets that confirm what they already believe.

It seems that the speech accomplished what it was supposed to: rally support of wavering and disappointed democrats, It was not meant to change the minds of republicans. All they have to do now is put in some tort reform and give some leeway on the public option, and the bill is good as gold.

@bigreed
CBS is junk all the time...I don't care if they had Obama at 5 percent approval, they are a junk company and produce nothing but junk. After 2004 I dismiss everything they do and say by default.

@Aaron_in_TX:

I think your side forgets how you acted the past 8 years. Usually parties out of power are a bit more extreme and use more powerful rhetoric....because so much attention is given to the president and by proxy his party. The Dems did some really low things the past 8 years, used some pretty nasty rehtoric and played really dirty for 8 years. The rolls have just reversed themselves.

The Dems have no room to lcaim the holier than thou approach in politics. Dems have a very very dirty playbook as does the GOP. The left worlwide attacked Bush on a dialy basis, everything from books about Bush's assasinations to calling him a war criminal to accusing him of being behind the 9/11 attacks....

You cannot have a rational discussion without first accepting tha tboth sides have extremes, both sides play dirty and both sides take no prisoners when they do not occupy the WH.....its just how it is.

Stillow, you pick and choose which polls you like and dislike based on the results. The results for this CBS poll were not good at all from 8/31 so are you going to disregard that one too? That one didn't look too biased towards President Obama so how can you disregard all CBS polls?

For the umpteenth time CBS is junk. After the 2004 campaign they have no place in the news business....I have said 50,000 times I don't care if I like or dislike a CBS result, they are a crap company and I dismiss everything they do.
