Thompson would make this race a dog fight for the Dems to hold. Thompson was a pretty popular governor just a few years ago in this state.

It will be interesting to see if Thompson throws his hat in, if he does he will surely get the nomination.

A lot of dog fights emerging early for 2010 in states where the Dems normally cruise to victory.

Gonna be a fun election season next year.

Is there much of a difference between the two other than the (D) and (R)? Thompson isn't exactly a Jim DeMint type of Republican.

As a Republican in Wisconsin, I think Feingold is actually more fiscally conservative than Thompson. Tommy is part of the problem with the GOP - just another big-spending government type. We need a younger, fresher face who has private sector experience - not an entire life in government.

No, he is not a conservative, but the strategi move is tryign to control the senate. Look how the Dems recruited all those conservative Dems who won in 2006 and 2008. Its causing them headaches now tryign to pass liberal legislation, but the key is by getting all those conservative Dems elected they contro lthe agenda. If the GOP can pickup some seats in some of these blue states, they would have the same headaches the Dems have now, but they would contro lthe agenda.

Its more strategic than poltical to win a seat like this.

If Thompson comes out of retirement, he's going to be running for governor, which would be easy-pickings for him and wouldn't require a long-term commitment. He's not going to get into a competitive race with a popular incumbent, especially at 69 years old.

Thompson is not going to run for Senator. He's given absolutely no indication that he would be interested in doing so. If anything, it would be for governor again. And other than Thompson, no one is going to be able to challenge Feingold. He's an accepted and generally liked 'institution' in this state.
